Yes, such stories can get scary when written well and believable enough. I've never written 40+ pages on a single chapter for any other story, which is part of why it's proven to be a challenge so far.
I've always been good at writing scary stuff but nothing quite like Crawl. A portion of the plot is very human-centered. One is a serial killer aspiring to be a new god of a world purged of all evil. The other is a woman from a parallel reality who's frightened of him, and has nowhere to run to. They're both stuck in a very unwanted situation, and will have to form some sort of middle ground to actually cooperate with one another.
