I'm not sure how many members have projects that involve original work, or original characters within a fanwork. Heck, to be completely honest, nothing like that is even on my Master List quite yet. But I digress...

Character creation is a favorite topic of mine, but also something I struggle to actually do. Most of my characters for original works, or my OCs, start out one way and - as I write them - turn into a different character entirely. There's nothing wrong with that, of course; it's interesting and even fun.

Still, I would like to work on creating characters, and I'm hoping there are others here who are also interested! I thought it would be cool to make a post in this comm where people could share their processes, tips, and resources for character creation.

One enjoyable and surprisingly enlightening practice I've picked up is IC-ly taking quizzes on Zimbio - or any site like it; Zimbio just happens to be my go-to. The personality quiz method of developing a character once a concept exists was brought to my attention through NaNoWriMo, and it's great! I mean, it can easily become an addictive time-suck, yes, but answering the questions make me come up with details for my character I never would have before, and those help shape them further. I also like to look at the quiz results when they come with a blurb, and see what I agree with and don't in terms of how it applies to my character.

For the more traditional and nitty-gritty out there, there's also this great Google Doc, which even comes with a guide. It's a great resource for a complete and extensive character bio. Very extensive... In fact, completing it can be exhausting! I've filled it out (completely) for maybe two characters in the past.

That's what I have to bring to the table, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Hey everyone! I hope you're having a lovely day. I come to you with a humble request for assistance because my characters are being stubborn. (And lo, no author was surprised that day.)

I need help figuring out the end of Act 1 in my current medieval(ish) fantasy short story.

Here's the situation. You're a warrior from a kingdom where magic is outlawed, sent to hunt down and bring back the head of a witch who has made an (unsuccessful) attempt on the prince's life. You find her deep in the forest, coaxing a plant back to life under her hands. Inexplicably, she knows your name before you say a word to her. (Creepy.)

You shoot three arrows at her: the first two hit her but she's not affected like a normal person would be, and the third one she redirects with a wave of her hand and it falls to the ground. She says if you try anything more extreme (like decapitation or fire-setting) she'll kill you, but if you turn around now and leave her alone, she won't hurt you. However, you know that if you return to your kingdom without proof of the witch's death, the court will have you executed for failing to perform your duty to the crown.

What do you do, and why?

ETA: You people are wonderful! I think I know roughly where I'm going with this. Will post the link here when I'm done.

Hello, fellow bunny-hunters!

I am wondering what sort of tools you use for your writing. Specifically, I'm looking for a timelining tool. I used to use Liquid Story Binder, but I've since switched to Macs, and Scrivener (while amazing in almost every way) does not have a timelining tool.

So what do you use? Pen and paper? Excel? Some fabulous piece of software I do not yet know of? (I do have Windows installed in a VM on both of my Macs, so I technically could go back to LSB or use a Windows-only tool, but I'd prefer Mac-native if you know of one!)

I'm afraid I keep getting new ideas. Is there an established protocol for this? Should I add them to the list when they cross from premise to plotbunny? Should I put them on hold until next year?
